‘City of Temples’, Kathmandu is one of the most fascinating cities in South Asia. Durbar Square

Durbar Square is a must visit site in Kathmandu. Located in the heart of the city, the complex is a classic example of fine craftsmanship and traditional designing. Museums, temples, palaces, paintings, idols and sculptures are among the popular attractions at the square. Kotilingeshwara Mahadev Temple, Taleju Temple and Indrapur Temple are among the prominent temples here.

Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park

Established in 2002 with an aim to protect the flora and fauna of the country, the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is a popular attraction among wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Located on the northern fringe of Kathmandu Valley, the park is home to a large population of birds and animals including Indian leopard, jungle cat, golden jackal, Himalayan black bear, small Asian mongoose, fawn coloured mouse and large Indian civet. Over 400 vascular and 16 endemic plants can also be found here.

National Museum of Nepal

Preserving a major chunk of the country’s heritage, National Museum of Nepal is a key tourist destination in Kathmandu. Established in 1928, the structure features a wide collection of historical artefacts, sculptures, paintings, wood carvings, stone figures, manuscripts, ritualistic objects, Buddhist artworks, and weapons. The life sized statue of Jayavarma, wooden sculpture of a dancing goddess of the 15th century, intricate motifs carved on wood and a sword presented by Napoleon III are the popular collectables put on display here.

Lumbini

Known the birthplace of Buddha, Lumbini is a prominent Buddhist pilgrimage centre in Kathmandu. Discovered in 1896, the complex today houses some of the prominent symbols of worship including the great stone pillar, the Maya Devi Temple, a sacred bodhi tree and an ancient bathing pond. Eternal Peace Flame, Ashoka Pillar, Market Stone, Chinese Maitreya Temple and Burmese Lokamani Cula Pagoda are the popular attractions within the complex. Every year, thousands of monks and pilgrims visit Lumbini to offer prayers to the Buddha.

Indrachok

Named after a Hindu God, Indrachok is one of the famous commercial marketplaces in the capital. The complex has a collection of vibrant textiles, blankets, clothes, beads, bangles, jewellery, artefacts and numerous other valuables. Apart from the market, the Sky Temple with four metal lions at the entrance is a major highlight. Several eateries serving a range of delicacies can also be found around the complex.
